ELECTROCARDIOGRAM

Preparation: None
Duration: 15 Minutes

An Electrocardiogram or EKG is a noninvasive test that records the electrical activity of your heart. The test requires only that you lie still. A technician places electrodes in various places on your chest. In some cases, shaving the chest hair may be necessary in order to obtain better contact between the skin and the electrode.

An EKG can give your cardiologist information about your heart rate, the position and size of your heart chambers, how regularly your heart is beating. It can also show if there is a blockage in a coronary artery, and where the block is located.

Results are usually discussed with the patient by the cardiologist before the patient leaves the office.
