EXERCISE STRESS TEST:

Preparation: Wear comfortable clothes, and shoes that you can exercise in.
Duration of Test:  15-30 min

A common test used to evaluate how the heart performs during exercise.  This test is often performed to detect the presence of coronary artery disease, or to administer adequate medical therapy.  This test is also referred to as an exercise tolerance test, exercise EKG, exercise stress test or a treadmill test.

It is best if comfortable shoes and clothing are worn for this test.
This test is performed by first laying the patient on a table and hooking the patient up to twelve EKG leads. (Sometimes preparation includes shaving chest hair, and or gently exfoliating area where leads will be placed).

A baseline or resting cardiogram and blood pressure will be taken.  Then the patient will start on the treadmill.  The treadmill usually is started at a speed of 1.7 MPH and a ten percent incline.  Each “stage” of the treadmill test is approximately 3 minutes.  Every 3 minutes the treadmill will get a little faster and a little steeper.
After completion of the exercise portion, the patient will again lay down until the heart rate has returned to normal.

The results of this test will be discussed with the patient prior to the patient leaving the office.  A result will be faxed to the referring physician the same day.
