MYOCARDIAL PERFUSION IMAGING STESS TEST
(NUCLEAR STRESS TEST):

Preparation: Nothing to eat or drink after midnight. Check with our office regarding any medications that should be withheld. Wear comfortable clothing and shoes that you can exercise in.
Duration of Test:  Three Hours

This is a test to show how the blood is flowing through the arteries that supply your heart blood. It is important to know how the blood is getting to your heart under both rest and stress conditions. This test will also demonstrate if you’ve had a previous heart attack or damage to the heart muscle.

An IV will be started in the vein in your arm or hand. You will then be injected with a radioactive tracer. THIS IS NOT A DYE. The tracer must circulate for approximately 45 minutes. You will then be placed on a table and a camera take images of the tracer in your body. After these images you will be taken to another room and hooked up to EKG leads. You will then exercise on a treadmill. When you have reached your target heart rate you will then be injected with another dose of the tracer. You will need to exercise for approximately one and a half minutes more.

You will be monitored for a short period of time after you have exercised (recovery time). You will then be placed back on the table and another set of images will be acquired. This time imaging how the blood is flowing through your artery’s under stress conditions.
After the second set of images you will be done. You should hear the results from your test from your physician in 24-48 hours. A report will be faxed to your physician within 24-48 hours.
